M. rugby cruises to easy win

Collegian Staff Writer

For the second week in a row, the Penn State men's rugby team left its opponents in the dust. Two weeks ago, the team beat Towson University on the road 78-9.

It was a repeat performance last weekend at home, when the Ruggers went up against intrastate rival, the Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP) 66-0. Man-of-the-match were forwards Steve Flad and Dennis Reilly. Both were effective in the rucking and mauling and they showed their ball-handling skills by setting up some scores.

The Ruggers were using the game once more to assess their players on the bench as they are looking to improve their depth, something that will be critical for the spring season.

"We have some very talented freshmen and some very talented upperclassmen who have been with us for awhile but have just started playing," Penn State men's rugby coach Don Ferrell said.

They also used the game to work on their defensive techniques such as being more physical in the tackles.

The forward play also improved, which is something that the Ruggers have been working on all season. Their rucking improved and they also played aggressively and this led to them setting up some tries and scoring some too.

"It was a well rounded game for us and not back dominated," Ferrell said, adding that the Ruggers throughout this season have relied on their backs to win games.

Apart from learning that they have a lot of depth, the Ruggers feel that blowouts like these have taught them more about themselves.
