Navy (10-7-1) is the guest for senior night at Jeffrey Field tonight at 7 to conclude the regular season for the No. 3 Nittany Lions (15-1-1). The Big Ten tournament starts Thursday at Ohio State, so the Lions do not expect a drop in play.
"These games are important to build up for the Big Ten tournament and the NCAAs," Penn State coach Paula Wilkins said.
"This is what we build the whole season for so obviously we want no letdown."
Penn State wiped out a confident Maryland team ranked No. 19 on Wednesday, 6-0, and have been piping hot for the past two weeks. The Lions have outscored their last three opponents 17-0, with two of the three in the Top-25.
Navy has won two in a row and looks for a little redemption from last years first round pounding courtesy of Penn State in the NCAA tournament. The Lions won 5-1 last November.
The way Penn State's defense has been lately it almost feels like that was the last time anyone has scored on them.
Purdue was actually the last team to score against the Lions nine games ago and junior goalkeeper Erin McLeod's shutout streak is now at 780:11.
That's an even 13 hours for you English majors.
"It's not really about what Navy is gonna do," Wilkins said. "It's about what we need to do to get better and stay focused. We need to execute passes well and try to have no letdowns in a game."
Three Midshipmen, Meggie Curran, Brigitte Fox and Katie Eames, lead the team in scoring with eight goals each. The team as a whole has outscored opponents 41-20 this season, but it has yet to see a team like Penn State.
Nor have they seen a player like Tiffany Weimer. The junior forward has now scored in 10 consecutive games and is top-five in the country in goals (21) and points (51). With two more goals Weimer will tie Heidi Drummond for third on the career goal list at Penn State.
Recently Weimer hasn't been the only scoring option for the Nittany Lions.
Sophomore Ali Krieger scored her first four career goals and both Brooke Mertz and Holly Lincoln have added two goals apiece off the bench in the past three games.
Penn State will play the eight seed Indiana next Thursday at Ohio State in the first round of the Big Ten tournament.
The Lions have been knocked out of the conference tournament the past two years. They lost to Illinois in 2002 and Wisconsin last year.
"We want to finish up the regular season strong going into the Big Ten tourney," Wilkins said.
"The biggest thing is consistency and continuing to get better and better each game."
