Health requirement not needed at PSU
I have to say I'm glad to hear someone is finally looking into why we have the General Health and Physical Activity requirement at Penn State. I am currently a senior in engineering science, and I have no time to be taking a gym class. In addition to a full course load, I also participate in a sport outside of Penn State every day and compete on weekends. I know many other busy students who want to get their exercise at a time and place that is convenient. Our schedules are busy enough as it is without trying to fit in something irrelevant to our further education. By the time you reach college, you should know that exercise is healthy for you. It should be your responsibility to take care of your body. To Kristy Owens who commented that people will be more sedentary, I suggest you make people take responsibility for themselves and make their own choices. I certainly don't need or want this institution regulating my personal habits. I'm here to get a further education in the subject of my choosing, not to be told when and how to take care of my body. In response to Clarence Stoner who commented that many students wouldn't take it if it wasn't required, of course they wouldn't. Who takes classes they don't need? And who wants to be told that since karate is full, and swimming is during a course required for the major, and scuba costs extra money, that they have to take recreational walking. I'm so sure lots of people who are forced to walk for 1.5 credits "open up a whole new world to fitness and life-long activity." Let's just get rid of this requirement, and let people take responsibility for their own health. Rose Sandler
