Ball dresses up Roustabout!

Collegian Staff Writer

Roustabout! isn't won over easily. You've got to woo her, treat her right. Take her out dancing, maybe even get a little dressed up.

And sometimes, Roustabout! fans are the same way. So tonight's the night Roustabout! fans have been waiting for: the night of the ball.

A Halloween masquerade ball, no less, beginning at 10 p.m. and featuring Philadelphia's Golden Ball and local band The Bullet Parade at The Darkhorse Tavern, 128 E. College Ave..

Roustabout! organizer and The Bullet Parade lead singer Jeff Van Fossan encouraged everyone to come in full Halloween attire. And to provide a little extra nudge, those who do will get $1 off the $4 cover charge. The night's festivities are sponsored by The Rag and Bone vintage clothing store.

"I definitely support Roustabout!," store owner Shelley Banker said. "I know Jeff personally, and we were just sort of talking about possibly getting together and doing a thing I sponsor, just sort of a way of getting people to know about the store. He came up with the idea of doing a masquerade since it's Halloween."

Banker added that a lot of customers come into the store looking for decade-themed costumes.

So at tonight's show, she's bringing models dressed in vintage threads, including a '50s sock-hop girl, a '20s flapper, a '70s disco guy, an '80s prom queen and herself as a '60s go-go.

Tonight is also the first theme show for psychedelic pop band Golden Ball -- sort of.

"I guess for a Halloween theme, yeah, but our shows are usually pretty thematic anyway," bassist Norman Fetter said.

"We like to get into costume and put on a pretty visual show. There's definitely a psychedelic component to it, but we try to bring some new wave and post-punk," he added.

On that note, the band's costume theme for tonight is sure to blow your mind.

"I think the rest of the band are gonna be pirates, and I'm gonna be the kidnapped princess," Fetter said.

When asked if he drew the short straw, Fetter said he actually volunteered to play the damsel in distress.

"We were trying to think about costumes, and I was out thrift shopping, and there's just a huge number of '80s style ball gowns, and one of them just struck my eye, so I figured I'd grab it," he said.

As a 2000 Penn State alumnus, Fetter said that he's looking forward to playing in State College again alongside an old bandmate.

"I actually played with Jeff for a little while," he said.

"It was some incarnation of Jealous Sun. I guess that was his band right before The Bullet Parade. I think we may have played one show -- kind of a foggy period," he added.

At press time, it was still unknown what Van Fossan and the rest of The Bullet Parade, who usually dress alike anyway, would be sporting at the ball. One thing is for certain.

"I'm not gonna dress him up!" Banker said with a laugh. "I think he was talking about doing something with the band. But yeah, he gets off the hook that night."
