Penn State's defense dominates Cornell

Collegian Staff Writer

When you're ranked No. 19 in the nation and you're playing a club that's only won a single game, you're expected to dominate.

And the Penn State men's soccer team didn't disappoint -- as it outplayed, outhustled and outscored a struggling Cornell team by a score of 3-0 last night at Jeffrey Field.

The Big Red have only managed to tally five goals throughout the season, and the Nittany Lions certainly took advantage -- allowing a season-low one shot on goal, as freshman goalkeeper Conrad Taylor earned his third consecutive shutout.

"The team definitely earned the shutout today," Taylor said. "I was just standing back there so we'd have 11 on the field."

Cornell's lack of offense was partially due to the system it utilizes. The Big Red play an unorthodox 4-5-1, which consists of only one forward.

Still, with 10 red jerseys in the box, the Lions were having some difficulty scoring themselves.

With 27:32 remaining in the first half, senior defender Anthony Calvano came through for Penn State with his first career goal, swinging the momentum in the Lions' favor and putting the score at 1-0.

The Lions initially missed a shot, as Big Red goalkeeper David Mahoney deflected the ball away. But Calvano was able to convert on the Lions' second chance at a score.

"It was a cross from Jeff Chambers, and Simon [Omekanda] went up for the ball," he said.

"It bounced right to me and to my head, so I just tried to hit it over the goalkeeper."

The Lions' offense may have struggled a bit in the opening minutes of the game, but the defense was strong all night long.

"Our team defense was good today from the top to the back," Calvano said.

Omekanda had a golden opportunity to extend the lead to a pair of goals in the second half, but he missed wide left as no defenders were in the immediate vicinity.

Omekanda was later benched, and freshman Richard Costanzo capitalized on a Cornell turnover to score from 12-yards.

Less than five minutes later, Omekanda's replacement, Yan Carvalho, wound up recording his second goal of the season on a shot from four yards out.

"I'm going to try and do my best," Carvalho said.

"I just got the opportunity. They played it to me, and I scored."

After a disappointing 3-0 conference loss to Ohio State 11 days ago, Penn State has responded by outscoring its last three opponents by a score of 6-0.

"I think we're playing better than we were," Calvano said. "We are turning the corner, but I just don't think we have yet."

The Lions' next test will come this Sunday on the road against Michigan.

The game will act as Penn State's final conference game of the season.
