Beauty schooled
The ins and outs of keeping your face fresh and flawless this season

Collegian Staff Writer

Makeup, according to LC from Laguna Beach, is like art for your face.

And in the same way she is correct in hating Kristin, she's right about this. Unfortunately, things in real life aren't as simple as in Laguna Beach; it can be tough figuring out what kind of paint the palette of your face needs.

As in fashion, makeup has trends, and if you want to keep lookin' fresh then you best keep your eye on this season's spankin' new looks.

Biggest overall color trend: Metallic

Whether we're talking eyes or lips, metal is lightning hot. But don't think '90s hard-metal lips. It's less severe this time around -- just a little edge to lip color adds a three-dimensional feel, and for the eyes, a dash of gold, bronze, silver or steel will work.

Best Bet: Mineralize Eye Shadow by M·A·C and Color Riche Lip Color by L'Orèal Paris

Lip trends: Gloss and bright colors

Dazzling pinks, vivid reds, glowing violets and metallic shimmers are a must have. Do away with your conservative clear glosses and neutral lipsticks and treat your lips to some spunk.

Best Bets: Juicy Tubes by Lancôme, Megabites Lipstick by Jane

Foundation/Powder trends: Translucent, natural and dewy

Since eyes and lips are where the color's at, keep your face looking as natural as possible; don't use makeup to try and change your skin tone, but instead use it to bring out your given color.

Creamy moist skin is better then a matted, thick-powder finish. You can still use powder, but not a lot; a little dew is sexy.

Best Bets: Colorstay Stay Natural Makeup by Revlon, Mary Kay Full-Coverage Foundation

Eye trends: Duos -- Your eyes are in need of some double-teaming!

Powder, cream and crème powder -- everything is being sold in dual and triple lineups of colors.

Be semi-formal with a highlighter/midtone/accent combination, go all out with a gold/bronze team, or be everyday pretty with an asparagus/tan fusion.

Best Bets: Pure Color Eye Shadow Duo by Estèe Lauder, Gold Glimmer Touch Tint by Clinique.

Blush/Bronzer trends: Pretty pink and organic tint -- no gold skin!

Adding onto the purified look of your face, choose a shade that accents the color of your face -- not something that masks it. Obviously synthetic red cheeks make you look like you should be hanging out with Viviane's friends -- a.k.a. Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman.

And please, please remember that it's your jewelry that should be gold -- not your face!

Best Bets: Mary Kay Signature Cheek Color duets, Classic Color Blush by Cover Girl
