The time is 5 a.m., and most of State College is still quietly resting after a long night of studying, or maybe even a long night of partying. On the usually busy streets of University Park, not a soul moves. In this pre-dawn darkness, most of State College resembles an Old West ghost town.

Call it superior scouting. Offensive predictability, perhaps. Or even ESP.

This really was the next logical step. One wonders what took corporate America so long to figure it out.

It's halftime.

In a 4-0 shutout victory over Bucknell last night, the Penn State field hockey team completed step one of a multi-step plan to get the Nittany Lions (10-8, 3-2) into the NCAA tournament.

Of everything that Penn State quarterback Zack Mills played through Saturday -- the booing, the hard hits, the pair of interceptions -- worst of all was the misfortune that no one, including Mills, was aware of during the game itself.
