Hat tricks are pretty rare in hockey -- let alone two in one game.
But that was exactly the case Friday night when the No. 2 Penn State Div. I ACHA Icers outplayed then-No. 20 Drexel to a 13-1 score.
Junior transfer Greg Schwind tallied three goals -- all in the first period.
Not one to be outdone, senior Kevin Jaeger responded with a hat trick of his own -- scoring all of his goals in the second period.
"You go into a game trying to win, not thinking about a hat trick," Schwind said.
"But the opportunities came, and so did the puck."
Schwind, who transferred from Morrisville Junior College during the offseason, made an immediate impact on the game. With the score knotted 1-1, he lit up the lamp twice in 16 seconds to give the Icers a 3-1 advantage.
He later scored his final goal with 10 seconds remaining in the period, but his most impressive goal my have been his first.
Schwind lowered his shoulder to ward off one defender, as he somehow slipped the puck past the goalie -- and wound up knocking the net off its foundation.
