Coming into the weekend the Icers had been averaging 7.2 goals per game. So it isn't unusual for one of its players to record a hat trick. But what is odd is for one of those players to obtain that feat in one period.
It happened Friday night. Twice.
By the end of the first period, the score was 6-1 Icers, three of those goals belonging to forward Greg Schwind.
Maybe senior Kevin Jaeger felt left out of the party as the Icers ventured to their locker room during the first intermission. Or maybe Drexel wasn't pleased with how long it was taking Jaeger to break Penn State's goal-scoring record.
So they sped up the process.
The Dragons must have felt really bad for Jaeger because even when they had an advantage with a power play they allowed Jaeger to score his second-shorthanded goal at 11:35 remaining in the second period, giving him his third goal of the game as well.
That was around the time that Drexel's starting goalie was pulled from the game.
It was so bad that, going into the third period, the Icers had more goals (12) than Drexel had shots on goal (11).
One or two things must happen for a home crowd to search for the exit doors with a full period remaining in a game. Either the home team is getting blown away and there's no chance of coming back, or the team is winning so comfortably that the fans were secured a laugher. Hence, the Icers were up 12-1 going into the third period.
But all Icers fans know it was more of what their team did, rather than Drexel determining the outcome in this one.
"We knew they had young goaltenders and we knew this was one of those games we should win," coach Joe Battista said.
The Icers took their show on the road Saturday night to take on No. 10 Washington and Jefferson. The Icers were anchored by their defense as they only allowed 15 shots on goal, helping goalie Paul Mammola lead his team to a 7-1 victory. Freshman Dave Arcobello had two goals and senior Garrett Divins added a short-handed blast to help the Icers.
And so the easy part is done.
As the team practices this week, it'll have revenge on its mind as it prepares for a rematch with last year's ACHA champion, Ohio University.
Ohio is ranked No. 2 and the Icers are No. 1, so this one has the makings of a great battle.
"We've gotten off to a great start but this week will be our first midterm," Battista said.
