Moore criticizes current president

Collegian Staff Writers

Filmmaker Michael Moore gave his thoughts on President George W. Bush's presidency and the upcoming election to a crowd of 7,350 during Friday night's rally at the Bryce Jordan Center.

"Why reward him with four more years for a mistake he made that killed our young men and women?" Moore said. "If everybody gets up and does their job in the next 10 or 11 days, we are going to remove George W. Bush from the White House."

Moore also criticized the other Republicans currently in office.

"They have become a bizarro, crazy, extremist radical version," Moore said. "They took over the White House four years ago when they didn't actually win it."

Moore encouraged young people to vote by handing out ramen noodles and clean underwear, calling these articles the "sustenance of slackers everywhere."

Throughout the rally, Moore discussed minority rights, equal pay for women and same-sex marriage.

Moore showed satirical pro-Bush commercials, which portrayed Kerry as a "flip-flopper" because he changed hairstyles and criticized Kerry supporter and former Georgia Sen. Max Cleland because he "only" lost three limbs in Vietnam.

Moore did, however, have one positive comment about the current president.

"He's very good to his dogs," Moore said. "I'm sure he's a decent person to hang out with, but the stakes are high this year and it's not about who you want to have a beer with."

Moore said his appearance at Penn State cost the university about $30,000 because of the expense of his nationwide tour.

"The tour cost over half a million dollars," Moore said. "We take the fees to fund things like transportation and none of it goes to me personally."

Although not all students were fans of Moore, many thought he entertained the crowd.

"I think it's important whether you are a Republican or a Democrat to hear his speech and the issues that are vital to the upcoming election," said Bronwyn Lehman, a member of the College Democrats.

Some students said they were not impressed with Moore's speech.

"I'm frustrated because I'm an undecided voter who came here to get more information," Sarah Chobot (sophomore-general science) said. "Him attacking Bush isn't helping me make a more informed decision."

Even Bush supporters were in attendance Friday night.

"It seriously worried me that all those people actually believed the words that were coming out of [Moore's] mouth," Matt Shaffer (freshman-music education) said.

Moore shed his typical T-shirt and jeans for a new Penn State jersey during his visit to University Park, the 40th stop on his 60-city "Slacker Uprising Tour."

During a pre-rally press conference, Moore said the tour's goal was to convince non-voters and "slackers" to vote in the upcoming election.

"It's a success because thousands show up every night and convince thousands of others to vote."

Moore left the crowd with one final piece of advice before he left the stage.

"Sleep to noon, drink beer and vote Kerry," he said.
