PSU searches for conference win

Collegian Staff Writer

After losing three of its last six games, it finally looks like the Penn State men's soccer team is turning things around.

The Nittany Lions suffered a terrible 3-0 loss at the hands of Ohio State on Sunday but gathered themselves to collect a 2-0 win over Bucknell Wednesday night.

And if Penn State can maintain its high-intensity level, it may just collect its first Big Ten win of the season on 2 p.m. Sunday when it takes on Michigan State at Jeffrey Field.

"I think they're looking even more forward to this one," coach Barry Gorman said. "It's a Big Ten opponent, and it should be a good match-up."

The Lions have been lacking consistency and intensity in the later stretch of the season, but that appears to have changed since Sunday's loss.

After coming out flat against the Buckeyes, they opened up Wednesday with energetic chants of "We Are ... Penn State" and had a rigorous pre-game routine.

It's been a difficult three weeks for the Lions, as they've gone from No. 3 in the country to being unranked.

While Gorman doesn't appear to be worried about the polls.

David Walters avoids a tackle during the Lions' game against Bucknell Wednesday.

He is still a bit wary about Penn State being unable to capitalize on its scoring opportunities.

"We have to put away our chances, there's no doubt about that," he said.

The Lions' backline dominated Bucknell Wednesday as they had possession of the ball for a majority of the game.

And they'll need to be on top of their game Sunday with the Spartans' senior midfielders, Jordan Gruber and John Minagawa-Webster.

The pair has accounted for 15 goals and 12 assists, and Penn State will have to counteract their presence in order to have a shot at the conference win.

The Lions are currently second-to-last in the conference standings and are only one of two Big Ten teams without a conference win.

"I think the guys know they can do better," Gorman said. "I don't think our home fans have seen the best of the team; we've had better performances on the road this year. But I think they'll see good performances Sunday and next Wednesday [against Cornell]."
