Health requirements should stay at PSU
As a kinesiology major and a future health/physical education teacher, I may be a bit biased on this topic, but the idea of eliminating our GHA requirements is just ridiculous. In a time where the interest of living healthier and more active lives is at a peak, why are we thinking about eliminating some people's only exposure to physical activity? There are many people who may take a GHA class with little interest but end up finding an activity that inspires, motivates and keeps them active for a lifetime. If these requirements are taken away, many students will not take the classes, though some may. The students that take these classes are going to be the ones that are already interested in physical activity and health. The people that end up not taking them are the ones who actually need the classes the most. These individuals are the sedentary types that have no interest in physical activity for health, but these are exactly the type of people who we need to help the most. If the faculty senate is looking to get rid of the GHA requirements, I have a request for them: Eliminate my math, science, and art requirements, because if others don't need to take a health requirement why should I as a kinesiology major need to take those classes?
