'Real World' star to give travel tips

Collegian Staff Writer

It's never too early to start thinking about spring break.

To prove it, STA Travel is bringing one of MTV's The Real World stars, M.J. Garrett, to Penn State.

M.J., on Real World: Philadelphia, currently airing on MTV, will be speaking about traveling, sharing his experiences abroad and giving travel advice to students for spring break plans tonight. The event will take place outside 104 HUB from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

"It will be a hip, informal event where students can talk to and get advice from M.J. about spring break travel plans for free," said Margi Erway, STA's on-site coordinator, adding that Garrett will be available afterward for autographs and photos.

Information for trip packages, travel contests and travel advice will all be available at the event.

"M.J. will be helping students decide what to do over spring break and giving them travel tips," said Karen Stapley, STA public relations coordinator.

She also said there will be a contest for a free trip to London or Cancun.

The event is part of the third nationwide tour that STA Travel arranged with Real World actors and actresses.

"First we did this with Real World: Paris participants, then San Diego's and now Philadelphia's," Stapley said.

Each participant stops at a few universities across the nation.

"[Penn State] is one of the school tour stops across the country," Stapley said.

Garrett is one of three Real World: Philadelphia stars to visit universities across the country. Landon Lueck and William (Willie) Hernandez are also visiting schools. "We pick the Real World people who are really passionate about traveling ... we found that out when we sent them abroad while they were filming," Stapley said. "They are the ones we want sharing their experiences and giving advice."

Randy Widener, from Real World: San Diego, visited Penn State in April as another spokesman for STA Travel.
