Penn State, OSU battle for No. 1 spot in Big Ten

Collegian Staff Writer

The Penn State women's volleyball team has a midterm scheduled for tonight.

No. 7 Ohio State (18-0, 8-0 Big Ten) is the test, and extra credit goes to No. 5 Penn State (16-1, 7-1) if it can keep senior Stacey Gordon from blasting off the Rec Hall roof.

Gordon is the newly minted Big Ten all-time career kills queen, getting her 2,380th kill against Michigan, Saturday, and was honored as the Big Ten Player of the Week for her efforts.

The Nittany Lions have had their hands full with Gordon in the past, and won't be too sad after tonight -- her final visit to Rec Hall.

"We know that Stacey Gordon is going to get her kills," Sam Tortorello said. "No one has stopped her in the four years that she's been playing and we know that we can't limit her to only 10 kills. But we know that we can limit her from having 40 kills."

If 40 kills sounds outrageous, it only shows how nothing is impossible when Gordon steps onto the floor.

Last year against Gordon, the Lions held the star Canuck to 24 kills, which was enough to get out the blue-and-white-colored brooms and sweep the Buckeyes out of Rec Hall in three games.

"Stacey has the ability to win matches and take them to higher highs," Penn State coach Russ Rose said. "But if people have problems, she can't compensate if the other people don't play well. The reason that they're 18-0 is that they've played well as a team, not just because they have Stacey Gordon."

The Buckeyes are a much more complete team this year, as their record shows, all thanks to some new players at some critical positions.

Starting setter Marisa Main, a sophomore transfer from Xavier, is a true positional setter compared to the system used last year with current outside hitter Briana McCarthy setting the ball.

Penn State's Kate Price (16) goes up for a spike against Michigan during their game Saturday night in Rec Hall.

Also new is middle blocker Maya Mapp, a senior formerly of North Carolina State.

"Stacey's got 38 percent of the team's kills, which means that the other players are responsible for the other 62 percent," Rose said. "That's an indication of not only how valuable she is to their results, but it's also an indication that they really upped the talent since last year.

"We were at game point [last year] and she hit a ball that people still talk about, but it didn't make a difference because we scored the next point and won the match."

Matching up against Gordon at outside hitter for the Lions is standout newbie Kate Price, already second on the team in kills this season and only a freshman.

Gordon won't be the first top-national player looking at Price on the other side of the net, though. Price faced U.S. Olympian Ogonna Nnamani in the Lions win over No. 11 Stanford on the road, and led the Lions with a career-high 28 kills, leading the match.

But is she ready Gordon?

"I don't know," Rose said. "Katie, are you going to be intimidated by playing against Stacey Gordon?"

Price, who still gets that freshman twinge of fear on her face every time she's called out by the coach in the middle of practice, even when Rose is joking around, looked up from her serving drill and said, "No."

The Buckeyes undefeated record puts them on top of the Big Ten right now, but with a win tonight the Lions could grab a share of the lead.

Right now, Gordon has other plans.

"The Big Ten could be anyone's title right now," Gordon said. "We haven't played everyone yet, but we believe we could beat anyone in the Big Ten."
