This letter is in response to John McCarthy's letter yesterday ("Students should ask for actual fall break" Tues., Oct. 19), criticizing Penn State for giving students "only" one day off for fall break. You've got to be kidding, right? Fall break was implemented only toward the end of my time at Penn State so it was a welcomed development. Prior to that, the only break in the fall was for Thanksgiving. I don't see how this student feels he is entitled to get any time off from school when those who came before either of us seemed to have survived the fall semester just fine without any fall break whatsoever. Perhaps when McCarthy leaves the comfy confines of Happy Valley and he's working for a living, he'll understand that any time off -- whether it be one, two or five days -- should be appreciated and not taken for granted. Don't kick a gift horse in the mouth.
