Veteran bands to perform at Roustabout!

Collegian Staff Writer

While there's clearly a group of addicts who swarm into Roustabout! every week for their fix, there's also a few bands particularly hooked on its stuff.

So to satisfy both local and visiting junkies alike, tonight's Roustabout! will feature the veterans of Pittsburgh pop band Camera with Happy Valley's own anglophiles The Bullet Parade, beginning at 10 p.m. at the Darkhorse Tavern, 128 E. College Ave.

The tight-knit Pittsburgh music scene, which lately has become a presence at the weekly music showcase and debauch-fest, considers State College a must when playing out of town, Camera bassist Joe Dello Stritto said.

"That's one of the places that we always talk about and make sure, you know, if you're on your way to New York, go to State College first," he said.

The record release party Dello Stritto attended this weekend in Pittsburgh was almost like a Roustabout! itself; the spotlight was on the band Shade, and guests included such luminaries as Black Tie Revue, the Pleasure Technicians and Two If By Sea, to name a few -- all with a State College notch in their belts.

Looking around, Dello Stritto said he was reminded of some bad press. "It was a great turnout, actually," he said. "What's funny is the whole Esquire article that came out saying Pittsburgh is the place to be now. But the bands they named are like 10 years old. Someone wrote in saying they missed the boat; they didn't even name any of the good bands."

Tonight may be his chance for some kind of retribution, but The Bullet Parade frontman and Roustabout! organizer Jeff Van Fossan sees the show as preparation for the band's own out-of-town gig Friday at Philadelphia's venerable Khyber bar.

Roustabout! DJ Jen Partyka got a pretty good deal herself, recently taking over the duties on bass for The Bullet Parade.

"At first it was a little strange because I was never really focused on the bass before; I was more of a guitar and keyboard player," she said. "So at first it felt a little bit awkward, but I think now definitely after the month I've spent with them I feel a lot more comfortable, and it's getting easier and easier."

Partyka said she also shares Van Fossan's excitement about Friday's gig at the Khyber, which is also hosting indie darlings the likes of The Wrens and The Fiery Furnaces in the near future.

"...I've never joined a band that's this active; like oh, we're playing a different city every month, but it's cool. I'm really excited," she said.
