University's opinion on Moore lacks truth
I write in reference to Michael Moore's Oct. 22 appearance at the university, specifically, the use of University Park Allocation Committee funds to pay for it and the university's misleading editorial to Penn State alumni ("Free speech embraced at Penn State," which was written by Vicky Triponey). As one of those alums, I am appalled not only that Penn State flouted its rules by subsidizing Moore's visit, but that it now misrepresents any purported justification for its decision. UPAC policy couldn't be clearer. It prohibits "appropriations to any partisan political activity, or for the support of the political campaigns of any candidate for political office." Presumably, if the university could defend its decision by arguing Moore's appearance is not a "partisan political activity" (which is the only way to do so) it would have ventured to make that argument. Triponey's editorial, though, says nothing of this provision, or UPAC policy at all. This, we know, is because Moore is a partisan shill, no matter how he markets his campus tour. Triponey misdirects and distorts, musing about a "free speech" campus and calling the issue a "mini-drama over Constitutional rights," even though there is no Constitutional issue here. The only issue is the violation of UPAC policy. Moore is always free to visit and speak at Penn State. Triponey omits the fact that Penn State won't be spending a dime on Michael Gallagher's visit and chides Gallagher for coming to Penn State because he's "angry that Penn State students have invited Moore to campus." This is false. Again, the only issue is the inappropriate use of UPAC funds. Penn State alumni should recognize Triponey's editorial for what it is -- a shameless distortion of an indefensible decision. What a shame that Moore's appearance coincides with Homecoming.
