NEWS

Penn State received a $3.5 million grant, last week, from the Ben Franklin Technology Development Authority (BFTDA) to increase nanotechnology education, commercialization and research.

It couldn't happen again.

The University Advising Council (UAC) recently proposed examining student satisfaction surveys from various academic colleges to address advising concerns.

Within the next week, crime victims in Centre County will be able to track the status of their offenders with the assistance of a new program called the Victim Information and Notification Everyday system (VINE).

Heavy fines and criminal penalties will be imposed upon those who secretly install "spyware" onto computers with the implementation of two bills approved by the U.S. House of Representatives last week.

University officials are denying the claims made in a lawsuit filed by an evangelical Christian group against Penn State President Graham Spanier and Vice President for Student Affairs Vicky Triponey.

A Libertarian speaks

Today marks the beginning of a week's worth of events that celebrate "Honoring the Legend" for Homecoming 2004, which will culminate with the parade and Homecoming game this weekend.

Ever wonder where the final resting place for Penn State computers is?

The stage is set for a Friday night homecoming battle of political ideologies between radio talk show host Mike Gallagher and filmmaker Michael Moore.

I melted last night.

SPORTS

Why is the number six scared of the number seven?

It was just over a year ago: Nov. 1, 2003, home in Beaver Stadium, with a kickoff time of 3:30 p.m.

Pathetic.

Another weekend at home, another weekend of wins for No. 5 Penn State (16-1, 7-1 Big Ten).

Though she's always one of the shortest people on the field in stature, Penn State field hockey co-captain Amanda Eckert has a presence on the turf that cannot be measured.

Déjà vu can be a great thing -- especially when it entails grabbing a pair of wins over the weekend.

Sometimes for the members of the Penn State field hockey team, it seems that if they didn't have bad luck, they would have no luck at all. Another hard-fought game, another highlight-reel-caliber defensive performance, another disappointing loss. The Nittany Lions fell to No. 20 Iowa 2-1 on Friday in a game that went into two overtimes before the visiting Hawkeyes notched the game winner.

The Penn State men's lacrosse team got an early start to its season yesterday, competing at a high level in the 29th Annual Fall Tournament at the Multisports Field.

Since 1998, the first of its now seven consecutive Big Ten championships, the Penn State women's soccer team has only lost four conference games.

On a brisk autumn morning, and a swamp-type surface, the Penn State women's cross-country team held its annual National Invitational Meet for the 36th time.

When the Penn State men's cross country team hosted the Spiked Shoe Invitational on Sept. 11, the overconfident Nittany Lions took an early lead that they could not maintain, falling to a fifth-place team finish.

It came down to the last drive of the game. The Penn State men's rugby team was in possession of the ball and needed a try to tie the game.

The Penn State men's tennis team had not played competitively in two weeks.

The possibility of a new baseball stadium at Penn State depends on whether the Altoona Curve, the Class AA affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates, can provide the funding needed to build it.
