M. tennis wins all 17 matches

Collegian Staff Writer

The Penn State men's tennis team had not played competitively in two weeks.

The time off, though, did not seem to phase the Nittany Lions at the Army Invitational over the weekend.

On the first day of competition the team didn't lose a match.

The Lions won every game against Buffalo University.

"We just dominated all nine matches," Coach Jan Bortner said.

This was highlighted by sophomore Bradley Hunter's 6-0, 6-0 win over Buffalo's Josh Lidderman.

"Bradley Hunter had a good, strong weekend," said coach Bortner.

The Lions also seemed to have no problems in singles competition against St. Joseph's winning all seven matches on Saturday.

Sophomore Ryan Berger dominated his opponent in his 6-1, 6-2 win.

The freshmen also had strong showings on Saturday.

Freshman Michael James lost the first set 2-6, then went on to win the next two sets 6-1, 6-4.

"The freshmen played very well especially James Dwyer who won all three of his matches," said Bortner.

Dwyer won decisively in all three of his single matches.

This weekend also saw the debut of freshman Guillermo Lasso.

Lasso won both of his matches in his collegiate debut on Saturday with wins of 8-5 and 8-3.

Things did not change yesterday as Penn State cruised against Army.

The only singles loss against Army was by first singles Mark Barry, who lost 6-4, 5-7, 7-6.

"Barry had a tough loss against the kid from Army," Bortner said. "It was not due to lack of effort. They both gave up a shot here, a shot there. Overall it was a great match."

Junior Malcolm Scatliffe also received a slight scare in going three sets but he pulled off the win in a 7-5 final set. The Lions also won two out of three doubles matches against Army.

The teams of Barry/Scatliffe and James/Berger won their matches 8-4.

Up next for the Lions is the ITA Northeast Championships in Blacksburg, Virginia.

The team hopes that this weekend is a sign to come for the future.

"It was a great weekend for the team as a whole," said Bortner

"We played tons of tennis, and had lots of success."

The competition will be harder in the Championships as the team goes back to preparing for the tournament that lasts Thursday to Tuesday.

"The guys played very well in singles as a whole," said Bortner.

"Hopefully this weekend will give the confidence for the big one next weekend."
