[ Thursday, Oct. 14, 2004 ] Letter to the Editor
Threat of draft real, not merely political
The letter to the editor written by Jason Waeltz ("Sen. Kerry said draft could be necessary" Wed. Oct., 13) makes the claim that Sen. John Kerry thinks a draft is necessary and President Bush's administration wants to scale down troops in Iraq. This claim is made completely out of context, and the resulting argument is just plain wrong. The troops in the U.S. military are way overdrawn, and there still aren't enough troops in Iraq. Even Paul Bremer has said there were never enough. So, the Bush Administration has turned National Guard units into almost active duty units. He has also installed a backdoor draft to keep soldiers eligible to retire and go home to their families in the military to keep its size up. Furthermore, Kerry's admittance of this problem and stating that increasing the size of the regular military will fix this problem is within reason, but that does mean he supports a draft. The now infamous draft bill was submitted to Congress in January 2003, and it all but completely died on the committee level. But, the Republicans in the House rushed it to the floor for a vote in nothing more than a political ploy to be able to say they are opposed to the draft. The real fear is that it could be resubmitted after the election and there are no external political motivations. Jim Coder
