The Undergraduate Student Government (USG) Academic Assembly met last night to discuss newspaper littering in campus classrooms and buildings.
Nicole Belolan, representative from the College of the Liberal Arts, introduced the issue to the Assembly after attending a recent meeting of the University Committee on Instructional Facilities (UCIF).
Belolan said UCIF discussed the lack of cleanliness in institutional buildings. USG President Galen Foulke said littering in classrooms is a major issue at Penn State and is costing the university unnecessary money.
He added that USG's "WE ARE" campaign will demonstrate the problem through a display in front of the HUB-Robeson Center. Foulke would not indicate when the display would occur, but did say USG would issue a press release before the event.
A fire alarm forced students and employees in the HUB-Robeson Center to evacuate at about 2:40 p.m. yesterday, however, officials later determined the situation to be a false alarm. "Someone just pulled the fire alarm," said Bob Brouse, a HUB information desk supervisor.
The building was evacuated for about 10 minutes. People began re-entering the building at about 2:50 p.m. Brouse said the alarm pulled was on the ground floor.
Penn State's Off-Campus Student Union will join forces with Undergraduate Student Government Legal Affairs tonight to inform students of issues related to leases, landlords, and roommates.
The "Renter's Rights" program, which will be held at 8 tonight in 201 Thomas, is aimed at students who already live off-campus or are considering moving off-campus next year. OCSU President Kristen Kofmehl said she expects between 50 and 100 students, adding that the program will begin with an information session and end with a period for students to ask questions.
