Calendar creator, girls set for Stern

Collegian Staff Writer

The "Girls of Happy Valley" may travel to New York to meet "The King of All Media" when he interviews them for the Howard Stern Show.

The ladies are the stars of Penn State student Alex Germain's latest calendar titled "The Girls of Happy Valley." The second annual calendar came out in September for the 2004-05 academic year.

After holding a casting call for all State College women and creating the calendar, Germain (senior-communications, arts and sciences) sent one to Stern's show in a marketing effort.

"I sent them a calendar and they are really interested in having the girls appear on the show," Germain said. "It's just a matter of scheduling now."

The women who posed for the calendar are looking forward to going on the Howard Stern Show.

"I'd be all for it," Abby Gordon (senior-hotel restaurant and institutional management) said. "You have to try everything once."

Katie Nickel of State College said she would also like to go on the show.

"I would definitely go just to support the calendar," she said. "It was a really fun experience for all of us girls."

The calendar is his brainchild, Germain said, adding that last year's calendar was not well received.

"The first 'Girls of Happy Valley' calendar came out last January," Germain said. "Because of the late start it didn't sell as well as expected."

Germain said he is not worried about that problem this year because the calendar coincides with the school year and includes football and basketball schedules, registration and late drop dates, study days and national holidays.

"It's highly improved upon the last in terms of the overall production, graphic design and photography," Germain said.

Germain said he got the idea for the calendar after noticing "attractive" women on campus.

"I wanted to work with hot girls and make some money at the same time," Germain said. "Being a young entrepreneur, I decided the best way to do this was to make a calendar of the girls in State College."

Germain made a deal with WJHT-FM (HOT 107.9), exchanging advertisement space in the calendar for on-air promotions of Germain's project. Germain also runs a Web site, www.girlsofhappyvalley.com, where individuals can find more information about the calendar and place orders.

"There are various businesses around town that have agreed to sell the calendar," Germain said, adding that Canyon Pizza, 260 E. Beaver Ave., Got Used Bookstore, 206 E. College Ave., and Student Book Store, 330 E. College Ave., which bought 500 copies, will sell the calendar.

He also is trying to sell the calendar at football games through the Penn State Bookstore's concession stands.

Got Used Bookstore manager Bill Ryerson said the calendar had been in demand because of its previous edition.

"People have been asking for it because we carried it last year," Ryerson said.

Though the calendar is done in a "swimsuit" style, Ryerson does not think the calendars will offend anyone.

"We carry items for a college market that would sell to college students," Ryerson said. "If someone started a 'Guys of Happy Valley' calendar we'd carry that too as long as it wasn't indecent."

Germain is already looking for women to be in next year's edition.

"My goal is to create a swimsuit calendar for each of the Big Ten schools and eventually a national college swimsuit edition," Germain said.
