NEWS

Politicians may vie for the young vote, but few campaigns focus solely on it.

Less than a month before the Nov. 2 election, Pennsylvania adopted a law Friday ensuring that the commonwealth would automatically conduct a recount in the event of a close vote.

While the dull gray sky of early morning threatened to rain on the soccer fields of the 2004 Mini World Cup, it could do very little to dampen the spirits of the competing teams.

Despite the cold winds and dark clouds, about 120 runners gathered yesterday for the 14th Knights of Columbus 5K Race to benefit the Schlow Memorial Library children's department and the Tom Kleban Recovery Fund.

For most people attending the women's soccer game, it was just another win for the Lady Lions; but for the children of The Second Mile, it was an opportunity that will always be remembered.

A mix of people met Friday in the State College Borough Municipal Building, 243 S. Allen St., to discuss a new location for a downtown bus terminal.

Instead of sleeping in on Sunday, Frances Crespi found herself on her hands and knees, scrubbing Interfraternity Council/Panhellenic Dance Marathon mats as part of the Homecoming Day of Service.

Though National Coming Out Day will be celebrated across the country today, those in Penn State's lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community will postpone their celebration until Homecoming weekend.

When Carina Smith walked back to East Halls after her classes Friday afternoon, she did not expect to encounter the vibrant outdoor scene that greeted her and hundreds of other freshmen.

Working his way through the clothes and textbooks sprawled across his bedroom floor, Undergraduate Student Government (USG) President Galen Foulke sat down at his computer last Wednesday morning to send a few e-mail messages.

SPORTS

All season Penn State men's soccer coach Barry Gorman has begged his team not to overlook any of the opponents on its schedule.

While the rest of the Penn State men's tennis team was given a break from practice last Tuesday and Wednesday, junior Malcolm Scatliffe had to prepare to leave for Tennessee.

For the 24th time the doors of the Greenberg Ice Pavilion were opened at the commencement of a new season Friday night. The skates were sharpened a bit more precisely, hockey sticks taped a tad thicker.

The No. 6 Penn State women's volleyball team (14-1, 5-1 Big Ten) is back on track.

Without one of their best players, the Nittany Lions lost a close game to a dominant Big Ten-squad Saturday night. Penn State's offense once again failed to tie the game in the closing moments.

It was just a typical weekend for the No. 3 Penn State women's soccer team.

By all accounts, Kyle Orton was supposed to waltz into Happy Valley.

When the game ended, you probably didn't notice him as he trotted off the field Saturday.

Somewhere, the encouragement of moral victories ended for this team; they have been replaced now.

Underneath it all -- under the affected glances of the players, under the furrowed brow of their coach, under the sheer exhaustion of a team that came so ridiculously close -- lies one fundamental truth: the Penn State football team (2-4, 0-3 Big Ten) played one heck of a game Saturday.

Coming in second-to-last does not discourage the Penn State women's golf team, but just reminds it of the possibilities of improvement.

ESPN's sports business reporter Darren Rovell spoke to a group of about 60 students at Carnegie Cinema on Friday.
