Top recruit doubts Lions

Collegian Staff Writer

There comes a point when losing records start to wear on a program. One way it can take its toil is in recruiting.

And it appears the Nittany Lions' struggles on the field have caused at least one recruit's opinions to change.

Wide receiver recruit Derrick Williams of Greenbelt, Md., who many consider the best high school football player in the country, is starting to have some doubts about Penn State, according to his father, Dwight Williams.

"Their record is not that good," Dwight Williams said of Penn State. "We're trying to determine if it's to the point where Derrick can't be successful there."

Williams already took one of the five official visits the NCAA allows recruits when he visited the University of Florida on Sept. 26. He has said he also plans to visit Florida State, Oklahoma and USC.

The 6-foot, 198-pound Derrick Williams is still considering Penn State -- along with Tennessee, Virginia and Texas -- for one of his five official visits, but Dwight Williams' statement are contrary to previous internet speculation that Penn State might have even been the leader for Williams services.

"Penn State needs a lot of work right now," Dwight Williams said. "They need a lot right now.

"Derrick is looking for two things," Dwight Williams said. "A place where he will have the opportunity to play early, but also, a place where he can be successful academically and athletically.

"He has aspirations to move on to the next level."

With the lack of a consistent playmaker on offense haunt the Lions the past few years, Penn State has been aggressively recruiting Williams for some time.

They were the first team to offer Williams, according to his father, and they have treated him well throughout.

"I want to point out that we're really impressed with the coaching staff and Joe," Dwight Williams said.

Derrick Williams has been named the nations top prospect by both rivals.com and TheInsiders.com.
