Tomorrow the Penn State Nittany Lions football team will face the undefeated Purdue Boilers (4-0). This Saturday, thousands of Penn State fans will make the trek to Beaver Stadium to support the blue and white.
And this Saturday, we are once again hoping for the best. Yet, it doesn't seem in the past couple seasons we have seen quite the legendary "best" of Penn State football.
You can blame whatever you want for the football team's losses.
However, among the Saturday pilgrimages and tailgate parties, we tend to forget about the success of the rest of the Penn State athletic teams.
In the hustle and bustle of going to, or watching, the big "game," we tend to lose sight of other athletes who give their all to the Penn State community.
What about the other teams, where every player is also putting everything they have into fighting for the pride of Penn State?
Why do we easily let them slip by the wayside? Then become disappointed in Penn State sports just because the football team hasn't been doing so hot.
Look at the current seasons.
Women's soccer (9-1-1, 5-0 Big Ten) is ranked No. 5 in the nation. Men's soccer (5-1-4, 0-1 Big Ten), isn't far behind at No. 8, yet they can't get enough fans to "Jam the Jeff." (In reference to the newly renovated Jeffrey Field, which might not stumble off the tongue of a Penn State student as easy as Beaver Stadium.)
Last Saturday, the No. 6 women's volleyball team (12-1, 3-1 Big Ten) went up against No. 1 Minnesota, one of the biggest matches in NCAA history, however, attendance was just over average. (Like, dude, there was totally a football game on TV. That Penn State lost, mind you!)
No. 19 field hockey (8-5, 2-0 Big Ten) beat Indiana at Bigler Field on Saturday by a score of 1-0, and had the best showing of the weekend.
The women's cross-country team is still a top-10 team. Or at least they've finished 10th or better in every race thus far.
But chances are, people aren't signing up for listservs to get tickets to those games.
Penn State is a school 40,000-plus strong -- a school full of students who bleed blue and white. As a school, we need to remember the effort every team puts into winning for Penn State and show our support across the board, not only on football Saturdays. Let's bleed blue and white for every team.
Let's show the same rain or shine support to every player that wears our colors. Let's show up tomorrow, and every day after that, to prove, we really are Penn State.
