PSU equestrian team remains first in region

Collegian Staff Writer

Today is the best preparation for what tomorrow may bring, or in the Penn Sate Equestrian team's case it's the next horse show.

Over the weekend, the team upheld its winning tradition by tying for first place with West Virginia University in it's last home tournament for the season.

"We know how to ride the horses and the coaches know everything about the horses and they design the courses," Lauren Dowler, team president said on the advantages to a home show. "They know where the hard spots are and tell us so we are able to prepare."

The same teams from the previous week, including University of Pittsburgh, Seton Hill University, and Dickinson University with the addition of Westminster, attended the show, only this time WVU came back stronger, revenging it's second place from the week before.

Kate Gampfer was the high point rider of the show. There were strong performances by Kelly Berger, Laurne Klutchka, and Corey Dillion, all which placed first place in their classes. The team is first in the standings for their region and hope to continue to stay at the top.

"We are just making sure to make every ride count and make sure we get enough practice as possible," Dowler said.

They travel to Pitt next Sunday for another regional show. Due to the hard rains in Pittsburgh, the ring where they usually compete was washed away. The competition will be held in a smaller ring.

"We worked on tighter turns this week," coach Deanna Vonada said.

West Virginia will also be competing at the show and is not far behind Penn State in the overall standings.

"We want to keep on the same path," Vonada said. "We are used to be being on top and people gunning for us. We will be looking ahead instead of over our shoulder."
