UPAC made right decision with Moore
This letter is in response to Monday's editorial ("UPAC funding could cause concerns over political speech") and other recent views about UPAC's contribution to the Michael Moore speech. The most common misconception about the student activity fee and UPAC is that all of the funds are allocated quickly and the committee runs out of money "by January." This is untrue. There are just as many opportunities to receive funds in the spring as there are in the fall. Last year, budgets were reviewed and funded through the end of the year. The committee is becoming more fiscally responsible with each passing year. With responsible allocations comes a more efficient process. No group comes in and dances away with funding. UPAC dedicates all of its resources to ensure that funded programs are well-prepared and truly enhance the out-of-class experience. The committee has no poltical or social agenda. Members may have their own opinions, but these are not part of the allocation process. UPAC works to allocate the fee in the most equitable way possible. Do we need to bring the issue of UPAC funding to light? Absolutely, but people must first be informed about the committee. We strive to be open with the students because they are the ones who pay the student activity fee. I strongly encourage students and others to learn as much as they can. Allocating the fee is one of the most effective ways we have to enhance University Park. UPAC serves students very well; we welcome any inquiries you may have. Tom Truong
