Student producers aiming to become indie film gurus

Collegian Staff Writer

In 10 years, both Jim Santini and Jason Brewer hope that Brolik Productions will be a household name when it comes to producing independent films.

Brolik Productions started long before college, when Brewer and Santini were middle school students in Easton.

In choosing a name, the group chose a word with no real definition, Brewer said.

"We wanted something that stood out, something that made people wonder what we were about," Brewer said.

The group began as friends interested in filmmaking, and then banded together to form a production company while still in the "buffer period" of college life, Santini said.

"We didn't want to go out to Hollywood and have to prove ourselves," Brewer said. "We wanted to build our own style and have control over our future."

Along with three other friends, Brewer and Santini put together Brolik Productions in December 2003, which allows them to work as a private entity and become shareholders in their company.

"We are a full-service production company," Santini said. "We can do commercials, Web sites, logos, print media and produce music albums."

Brewer said the company's biggest projects so far have been Web design, and they have clients in both New York and Washington, D.C. Locally, Brolik is working on a second commercial for Pizza Roma, 111 Sowers St.

A commercial for downtown clothing store Industrie, 151 S. Allen St., also just finished and is set to air within a week.

"I let them do their own thing," Pizza Roma owner Matt Stein said.

"Whatever their idea is, it's better than mine," he added.

The last Pizza Roma commercial ran for two weeks in the spring and was seen on MTV, Comedy Central and the Cartoon Network, Stein said.

"The first commercial was greatly influential," he said.

Kevin Fessler, owner of Industrie, said the first commercial Brolik did for him ran on PSN-TV, and the second one appeared on ESPN this week.

"There was a good reaction to the first one," Fessler said.

Brolik's major goal is to produce independent films, Brewer said. "We want to build capital through our commercials to invest into our movies," Santini said.

While Brolik's headquarters are in State College, other members of the group can be found at Drexel University, Temple University and New York University.

"Ultimately, it will benefit us to have members branched out," Santini said.

Jay Pullano, a Brolik member and 2004 Penn State graduate, is based in New York and handles a lot of Brolik's public relations, he said.

"I'm the connection for Brolik from Penn State and New York," he said.

Brewer said having Pullano in New York is beneficial for the company.

Despite their sons' enthusiasm for Brolik, the parents of the young entrepreneurs were initially hesitant about the scop of their project.

"They were very questionable at first because it was such a big undertaking," Brewer said.

However, that changed after the group had proved themselves.

"Now that we can show them things, they are more supportive," Santini said.
