USG initiates speaker series

Collegian Staff Writer

The Undergraduate Student Government (USG) Senate unanimously decided last night to initiate a Guest Speaker Series to invite administrators and other Penn State leaders to address the Senate on a monthly basis.

"It's sending the olive branch to the administration," East Halls Sen. Matt Ritsko said.

Ritsko said while he does not always agree with the administration, it is necessary for the Senate to communicate with administrators to achieve certain goals.

"We do need to work with them for things to get done," he said.

East Halls Sen. Kimberly Roth said administrators have in the past addressed the Academic Assembly, USG's other legislative body. She said Penn State President Graham Spanier is scheduled to speak to the assembly next month.

"It would sound odd if he only went to [the assembly] and not [the Senate]," she said.

Town Sen. Jessie Baird said she liked the idea of hearing from administrators and getting the opportunity to ask them questions.

"I like this a lot," she said. "I have never seen Dr. Spanier in person."

The resolution passed last night calls for Senate President Chris Owens to coordinate the series.

Roth asked senators to make suggestions for potential speakers.

She said speakers could be invited to address the Senate on specific topics or they could choose their own topic, depending on what the senators want.

The Senate also passed a resolution congratulating students involved in planning the Sesquicentennial Games this past weekend.

Ritsko, who co-sponsored the resolution, said although the Senate decided earlier this semester not to contribute money to the games, he thought the body could still recognize the efforts involved in organizing the events.

"I imagine that any little bit we can say counts," he said.
