UPAC quick to fund Moore's visit to BJC

Recently, George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia refused to pay Michael Moore the $35,000 he requested to speak to their students on his "Slacker Uprising Tour." In response, Moore said that he would still show up "in support of free speech and free expression." Moore is scheduled to come to Penn State Oct. 22. The University Park Allocation Committee is funding a signifigant portion of Moore's visit, with some additional fundraising coming from the College Democrats.

Here's my question: Why should a portion of my activity fee pay an insane amount of money for a man that will only speak for approximately an hour and half? Moore is supposedly speaking as an activist. In the 1960s, an activist didn't get this kind of money - they suffered for their cause. Whether or not you agree with Moore's message is not the point (that's a completely different subject), as students we should revolt against the ridiculous wages that these speakers ask. If Moore would speak at George Mason for free, what's to say he wouldn't speak at Penn State for free? Sure, we can cover security expenses to keep the students and the speaker safe, but I think Moore has made enough money this year alone to pay for a night's stay at the Nittany Lion Inn and a meal or two. UPAC advisers: P lease spend our money wisely and economically.
