The recent Animal House analogy made by former Defense Secretary, James Schlesinger, is hardly appropriate in that it not only minimizes the seriousness of the Abu Ghraib tortures-comparable to the "boys will be boys" defense-but perhaps also misrepresents the soldiers' socio-economic backgrounds. I wonder how many fraternity brothers and sorority sisters (deviant or otherwise) are among the rank and file in Iraq. For that matter, how many college graduates join the military? Under either administration, haven't enlisted military personnel been predominantly working class? As voting has never been a cure-all, I'm afraid the current "vote or shut up" slogan is meaningless, particularly for the underclasses.
