I read with interest your article "Educators express mixed views on requiring voter participation." Which professors are forcing their students to vote? Upon careful inspection of the article, the answer appears to be none, but this is not what the casual observer would think. Although admittedly, the headline does not directly say that students are being "forced to vote," those who are interviewed are reacting to this idea. "Required to vote" is mentioned six times in the article. Despite this premise, only one professor was found who was requiring any sort of voter participation, and this was registration, which is different from requiring students to actually vote as part of class. This was an interesting subject for an article. But the result should not have been published as written. Further research may have indeed turned up a professor who is requiring voting as part of class. But without such an episode verified, this article becomes one more of rumor than fact. I am reminded of an article your newspaper published on the activities of www.fthevote.com, which presented a satirical offer of sex in exchange for votes against President Bush. Those asked about this website appeared to have not been informed about the true nature of this site. The Democrats were quoted as saying that they don't support prostitution. Well of course they don't. There's plenty of existing controversy on this campus. The Collegian need not create more by failing to inform those it interviews of the facts.
