Letter to the Editor
Sexual assault needs more local concern

I read the Collegian every day and the same Democrat versus Republican, conservative versus liberal, pro-war versus anti-war opinions every day. I also have my strong viewpoints about all of that but I also understand that there are things beyond the reach of what ever president is in office. The recent article about the sexual assault that happened on Fraser Street and the lack of response to that article is why I'm writing this letter. Sexual assault is a trespass physically and emotionally and it doesn't rob people of their choice to be a Democrat or Republican or pro-war or not, it just robs them of their choice period. I realize the upcoming election and the so-called "War on Terror" is at the forefront of many people's minds but where is the outrage, protests and manhunts against people that commit vile acts right down your street? There are real issues going on all around us at this campus friends, and sexual assault is just one of them. Most of us might only be here for four years but until that four years is up, this is our town, our university and our responsibility. So I encourage people to not befriend those of us who can do these things, do not give them safe harbor, raise the level of respect you have for everyone you live with in this town because by making it known that this community will not tolerate this behavior we can smoke them out.
