Academic Assembly addressing diversity

This is in regard to the Academic Assembly article on Tuesday, Sept. 28, 2004 titled "Assembly criticized for lack of diversity." Though Mark Bagley's argument seemed logical, I can assure you the apathetic image of Academic Assembly toward cultural affairs is incorrect. At the meeting Bagley named off organizations that work toward the betterment of diversity and accused the Assembly of not caring what those organizations did. Bagley then said that Assembly was not involved with them. I recently searched out Feminist Leadership Majority Alliance to join and become an active member. This is something that has been on my mind and heart long before Bagley's accusations. Also, Monday was the first time Academic Assembly met after talking with Dr. Terrell Jones, Vice Provost for Educational Equity on Sept. 20. He opened Assembly's eyes to the issues. In response to his talk a survey was made for Assembly to address any concerns and suggestions for speakers on the topic of diversity, it was distributed after Bagley left the meeting. I realize a survey is not going to change the world. However, it is a step in the right direction. I can not speak for the entire assembly but Bagley's defensive and acquisitive address made me intimidated about addressing diversity. He made me fear that what ever I do will be scrutinized as mere appeasement.
