Pizza Roma will leave late night tastes budding

Collegian Staff Writer

Most Penn State students have had their turn to live in the dorms, most have at one point or another gained a pound or two, done poorly on a test, lost an ID, skipped a class or worn dirty clothes.

And most of our lovely population has had quite an extensive taste of the many pizza digs in town.

Whether for breakfast, lunch, dinner, late night or middle of the night, you've probably had hundreds of pies.

So since pizza is the last thing that would seem to need promotion in a college town, it would seem odd that I pick to review a pizza restaurant.

But see, let me take you back in time to a few weekends ago.

If you go
What: Pizza Roma
Place:
111 Sowers St.

On the way back from a late night out, a friend of mine (we'll call her Dooma, because I say so) suggested we skip the whole Canyon Pizza ordeal and head on over to 111 Sowers St., across from Sharkies, to Pizza Roma.

A large cheese pizza was ordered and dug into soon thereafter; and people, allow me to let you in on the best-kept secret since seamless underwear: Pizza Roma pizza is good.

It's actually better than good.

It's goooood. It's hot as hell, it's got a thin crust, a perfect amount of not-too-sweet-not-too-salty sauce and is oozing with cheese and dripping with grease.

Needless to say, there was major gorging.

That pie was well down my esophagus and on its way to the digestive tract within 10 minutes of its being served to Dooma, the gang and me.

While stuffing my face, I noted that a definite pro to this pizzeria was that I was sitting, as opposed to standing.

And I was not being knocked over by belligerent screaming fools who only grow louder every time a large gong -- wha??-- is pounded.

Yes, I do mean Canyon Pizza.

See, Pizza Roma offers a huge seating area both inside and out and presents a relatively tamer atmosphere than the aforementioned eatery.

In fact, I was so impressed by Pizza Roma that I returned with another friend of mine (we'll call him JC) two times since then to acquire a broader taste of the menu and a larger waistline.

And it turns out pizza isn't Roma's only strength.

The menu is quite extensive, including an array of hot sandwiches, and salads, as well as wings and appetizers.

I tried the Provolone Wedges, which are colossal cheese sticks sliced, seasoned, battered and fried right there, and served hot and crispy with marinara sauce.

Good stuff.

I would even go so far as to say they are the best cheese sticks I have ever had.

JC was equally pleased with the Parmesan chicken sandwich he ordered, which was also quite hefty and came with fries.

And, bonus! The fountain drinks are not, I repeat not, Pepsi products, but the superior Coke brand instead.

The nice thing about Pizza Roma is that even though it's not, say, the "hot spot," it still has a pretty heated personality of its own.

It's chill, laid back and affords the space and ambiance to mingle and giggle with friends.

It's just a place where good times are waiting to be had.
