Letter to the Editor
Right to free speech should be protected

Congratulations to the Collegian Editorial Board for its editorial "Offensive hate speech needs to be protected for good of community." Since my time at Penn State it seems that those who most fervently demand their right to free expression are also the most intolerant of those with contradictory positions. Sadly, this has included past incarnations of the Collegian staff. A university should be a place where ideas can be debated to grow intellect. It should not be a place where individuals cower behind the trousers and skirts of a parental administration demanding, "Make them stop!" when they disagree with others. I am impressed that the board chose to remind us all that the Bill of Rights applies to all and does not include the Freedom from Being Offended.
