I hate waiting to get beer from a keg at parties.
I hate waiting in line at the gym to then wait in a line to use the cardio equipment.
I hate walking to class when 40,000 other students are switching classes and are walking as fast as a turtle.
I hate eating at the HUB for lunch because that means waiting in a 20-minute line to get food then waiting 10 minutes to find a table.
So yeah, I guess you could say I'm impatient. But you know what I've realized?
So is everyone else.
Nowadays everyone is always in such a rush for everything that they can't seem to wait for anything.
The sad thing is that people don't even realize how impatient they are because technology is just fueling their rush. Everywhere you turn there is something so that you won't have to wait.
First there were express lines at grocery shops and certain stores, now at Home Depot you don't even have to wait for the slow cashier to ring you up; they now have automatic registers where you ring yourself up and pay.
Express lines are everywhere now. Instead of waiting in line to pay the toll in expressways, now you can purchase a Sun Pass (well, this is for my fellow Floridians) or an EZ pass if you're in Pennsylvania.
Express passes are also available at several amusement parks so people won't have to wait in those dreaded hour lines.
There's an express something everywhere.
Then there's the fascinating technology of shopping online and not having to wait for anything, except for the shipping part. Now companies have overnight shipping, so you only have to wait a couple hours.
For many people, Christmas is their favorite holiday, except they hate trying to find their Christmas decorations among thousands of people at the mall in December.
So instead of killing yourself the day after Thanksgiving by fighting for the last set of lights or the box of tree ornaments that is least damaged, you can now get it ahead of time because there are Christmas in July stores everywhere.
I could just go on and on about things that exist to keep impatient people happy, but I'll spare you from reading 200 pages.
Most people might think all this wonderful technology is great because it allows us to have more time for other important things.
But this whole everyone-is-in-a-rush and-impatient thing really goes deeper.
Impatience really reflects the selfish society we live in today. Everyone is out with a competitive mentality trying to advance to be the best no matter what they have to do.
We just can't wait, we need to be the best now.
Kids in high school try to take as many AP courses as they can so when they get to college, they can be ahead and graduate a year earlier than their fellow classmates.
Fewer people are going to graduate school; they want to get a job now and start making a name for themselves so they can be CEOs of their company as soon as possible.
Once you get into the "professional" world, there is a lot backstabbing between co-workers in order to get promoted to a higher position and therefore be "better."
Why can't we just all get along?
It sounds like I'm back in kindergarten, but it's true. People can't seem to help each other out and be happy for others' success.
People, including myself, need to start being more patient and not be over-achievers because, if not we're all going to end up with stress heart attacks by the time we're 40. That's if someone trying to get ahead of us does not kill us before that age.
Students are always in a rush because not only do we need to go to class but also make it to all our meetings for our organizations. We need to go to work, take time to study so we can ace our tests, etc.
This is all so can be seen as good all-around involved students by prospective employers, which will give us an advantage above other students who were not as involved.
At least the notion that is going around in our generation is that you need to make your resumé as full as possible in order to score a good job and succeed.
So sure, get involved, make your resumé full, but don't push people off the rope while you are both climbing toward the top.
Be patient, we will all have our chance to reach our peak.
And if we don't, oh well, be happy with what you have and with your efforts.
If you're fair and honest, chances are you will get ahead in life. It might take longer but you'll get there. Just be patient.
