Chris Hort, Penn State football coach Joe Paterno's son-in-law, remains in intensive care at Altoona General Hospital as a result of head injuries sustained in a bicycle accident Saturday. Hort, 37, has been in the intensive care unit in Altoona since being life-flighted there after the accident Saturday.
The State College Police are continuing the investigation into the accident.
According to a news release update sent yesterday by the State College Police Department, Hort was traveling eastbound on East Park Avenue at approximately 2:57 p.m.
Hort then apparently hit an uneven patch in the road and crashed to the ground. At the time of the accident, no cars were approaching or passing him. Hort was wearing a helmet.
An eyewitness motorist observed Hort on his bike, and a few moments later, saw him entangled with his bike on the ground. Hort was found unconscious and unresponsive when the motorist stopped to administer aid, the release said. By the time police and medics arrived, Hort was "conscious and combative."
Hort was initially taken to Mt. Nittany Medical Center before being life-flighted to Altoona. The Altoona General Hospital would not release any information to non-immediate family beyond the fact that Hort remains in the intensive care unit.
Hort is married to Paterno's daughter, Mary Kay, and resides in Port Matilda. The couple has two sons and a daughter.
Injury updates
Penn State quarterback Zack Mills, who suffered an AC separation of his right shoulder in Saturday's game against Wisconsin, is listed as probable for the upcoming weekend's contest at Minnesota. He is listed first at quarterback on the most recent depth chart.
After the game Saturday, Mills said that the injury is worse than when he sprained the AC joint in his left shoulder (his throwing arm) at Wisconsin two years ago, but still vowed that he would be back for Minnesota.
Utility player Michael Robinson, who was removed from the Wisconsin game after sustaining a concussion, is listed as doubtful for the Minnesota game. Robinson is not listed on the depth chart, with Terrance Phillips assuming his usual spot as first split end and true freshman Mark Rubin cracking the chart for the first time this season. Junior Chris Ganter and true freshman Anthony Morelli are listed second and third, respectively, on the depth chart at quarterback.
