Letter to the Editor
Article perpetuates sorority stereotypes

In response to Thursday's article "Students fret over appearance during Panhellenic recruitment," I would like to ask the editors of the Collegian one question. What is the purpose of such an article? Personally, I do not believe that the fashion decisions of potential new members of the Panhellenic community is a newsworthy subject. Surely, there are more important topics, such as the upcoming presidential election or the destruction wreaked upon the South this hurricane season, on which the talents of the writing staff of the Collegian can be employed. Due to the superficial nature of this article, I begin to question the standards to which this publication holds itself. Most importantly, as a Panhellenic woman, I am outraged by this article in that it simply serves to perpetuate existing stereotypes that continue to stigmatize the Panhellenic community. Sororities are not about hair color, clothing brands or make-up; they are about sisterhood, the discovery of a sense of belonging, and the pledge to live one's life according to a clearly delineated set of values, principles, rituals and traditions. I am offended by the fact that the Collegian would reduce a way of life to manicured nails and Louis Vuitton handbags simply to fill space.
