In response to A.J. Fluehr's letter ("Collegian shows bias with feminist article") condemning the Get Out Her Vote coverage in the Collegian, there are a number of things I would like to point out. First, did it occur to Fluehr that perhaps this voter registration drive was highlighted because it stands out among others? Relating stories that are interesting and different is part of what makes a newspaper worth reading. Despite Fluehr's assumptions about feminists, there are those of us with the maturity to offer people access to the political system with out injecting our own views. The Get Out Her Vote campaign wants young people, particularly women (who are less likely to vote) to engage in our political system regardless of belief. Despite any differences we may or may not have, I believe that Fluer's voice has equal weight with ours or any one else's. This is the basis of democracy. I'm not working this campaign to get one candidate or another in office but because the apathy of our generation, and particularly at this campus, is inexcusable. I want people in this community to understand how this system works and to apply that knowledge. GOHV focuses on women, not because I want them to have special privileges, but because they are citizens - nothing more, nothing less - who have not been participating. Try to suspend judgment until you've read the article.
