'Let's Bottle Bohemia'
Album review

A bohemian is described as a person with artistic or literary interests who disregard conventional standards of behavior.

The Thrills, an Irish band with a distinctive So-Cal sound, is the epitome of the modern bohemian band with its wide range of genres. Listening to its appropriately titled sophomore album, Let's Bottle Bohemia, offered a refreshing blend of styles and genres of music from rock, to disco, to country.

The Thrills have a sound that cannot quite be placed. The sound reminded me of a lot of bands, but there is something a little bit offbeat about the music that kept me interested. The lead singer's crooning voice is a little less than appealing, as are some of the twangy and dissonant guitar chords, but this is made up for by the bands' use of piano and strings. The second song on the album, which just happens to be an ode to '80s child star Corey Haim, features a funky disco-style bass line and string accompaniment. It's downright groovy.

I was also impressed by the band's lyrics, especially the song "Found my Rosebud" for its obvious allusions to the classic film Citizen Kane. Regardless of your musical preference, many college students will be able to relate to the track "Saturday Night," which hints at the remorse felt after a night of drunken debauchery.

As song number 10 was playing, I thought the CD was almost over. Boy, was I wrong. The last track is actually ten minutes long and features a hidden track as well as a string solo sans vocals that reminded me of the Beatles orchestral masterpiece, "Eleanor Rigby." Score! This may not be the most thrilling CD I've ever heard, but it is full of intelligent, dynamic and feel-good tunes.
