Heated debate marked last night's Undergraduate Student Government (USG) Senate meeting, as senators discussed the recent Fiscal Responsibility Act and a contested Supreme Court associate justice appointment.
"It almost got borderline disrespectful," North Halls Sen. Isaac Bucher said near the end of the Senate's meeting.
Early in the meeting, USG Treasurer Andrew Reeve urged the Senate to withdraw the Fiscal Responsibility Act it adopted last week.
Reeve said he feared vague wording in the act that changed the Senate's bylaws, requiring it to create a budget by the fifth week of each academic year.
"I don't believe it was intended to put a quagmire in the whole USG system," he said. He urged senators to rethink the wording of the responsibility act.
Reeve said because of vagueness, the new bylaws could affect USG sub-accounts beyond the control of the Senate.
USG Vice President Luke Adams said the act was important and should have gone through a committee before coming to the Senate floor. Town Sen. Diana Maxham said that after listening to USG President Galen Fouke and Reeve, she wanted to rethink the act with input from the executive branch.
"People who should have been included in this weren't included," she said.
Senators will vote next week on whether to rescind the act.
After lengthy debate, Senate voted to reject Fouke's appointee for Supreme Court Associate Justice, Brandon Rothey.
Some were concerned about Rothey's lack of experience in USG.
He appeared before the Senate but it delayed its decision on his appointment because no one from the Court was present to offer an opinion about him.
