Men's soccer back in friendly confines

Collegian Staff Writer

Four games. Four double-overtimes. One win.

For the Penn State men's soccer team, that adds up to a lot of frustration.

"It's kind of annoying, actually," freshman goalkeeper Conrad Taylor said.

"Hopefully, we can take care of that this week."

The Nittany Lions will look for their fortunes to change this weekend at Jeffrey Field, where they'll be hosting the Penn State Nike Classic. The Lions open their home schedule against Virginia Tech tonight at 7:45 and wrap up the tournament at 3 p.m. Sunday against Akron.

The Zips head into the Nike Classic with a 3-0-1 record and have outscored their opponents 10-1.

Those statistics may be a bit misleading, however.

While Penn State has played three ranked squads thus far, Akron's competed against the likes of Robert Morris, Wright State, Princeton and Oakland.

"Everyone looks good against a weak team," Taylor said.

Still, the Lions say they aren't about to take their unranked opponents for granted.

"Virginia Tech and Akron have very good athletes," Penn State coach Barry Gorman said. "When people play Penn State, they don't lie down. I think we have a target on our back all the time."

Both the Hokies and the Zips are still scrambling to replace some impact starters lost to graduation. The Hokies have been unable to find someone to fill the big shoes of offensive dynamo Bobby O'Brien, who tied a school record with 15 goals last season.

Penn State's had trouble finishing games -- and three ties can attest to that. But the Lions still managed to move up one spot in the rankings this week to No. 13.

Akron and Ohio State will kick off the tournament at 5:15 p.m. today, and Virginia Tech will play Ohio State at 12:30 p.m. Sunday.
