"We have, in my opinion, the best police force of any campus," Penn State spokeswoman Amy Neil said. "If they can handle 100,000-plus people on a football Saturday, I'm sure they can handle the visit of Mrs. Heinz Kerry."
Penn State University Police supervisor Wayne Weaver said yesterday his department had not yet been contacted to aid the Secret Service in its protection of Heinz Kerry, but that they will be available if necessary.
"We've had a couple presidential visits," Weaver said. "We just assist the Secret Service with any requests they have for us. Any requests for assistance will of course be granted."
State College Police Department spokesman Cpl. Mark Argiro also said the department had not been contacted to help in the event.
"Just a wife of a guy running for president might not be enough of a reason to bring us in," he said.
Bob Slama, assistant special agent in charge for the Philadelphia Field Office for the Secret Service, said that often times local law enforcement is notified last minute because of political or personal changes in the candidate's or his family's schedule.
However, he added that there would be several security measures taken to ensure the safety of Heinz Kerry including advance groundwork.
"There will be a team on the ground prior to her arrival and with her when she arrives," Slama said.
Slama added that the usage of local law enforcement is always instrumental in campaign stops because of their knowledge of the area.
While students will not be taken through metal detectors, there will be additional security checks taken to ensure safety at the event, however the Secret Service would not comment on the nature of these procedures.
Khristyn Brimmeier, spokeswoman for the Kerry campaign in western Pennsylvania, said the campaign does not release details concerning security for safety purposes. However, she said that students should not carry large items, such as book bags with them to the event.
Heinz Kerry is scheduled to appear in Pittsburgh this morning and will fly to Boston immediately after the speech at Penn State.
