Radio station helps promote student clubs

Collegian Staff Writer

Student groups looking to promote their causes are lining up at the microphone in the WKPS-FM (90.7) studio as part of an air-wave blitz aimed at getting students involved on campus.

"It's their 15 minutes to shine," said Aaron Wright (sophomore-secondary education), programming director and creator of The Lion's Get Involved Week.

Wright, who found out about the radio station during his freshman Welcome Weekend, said he thought the event was a natural extension of the traditional Involvement Fair hosted in HUB-Roberson Center's Alumni Hall this week.

He said more than 600 student groups were contacted for the event and about 29 are scheduled for interviews this week.

Clubs hosted on air include activist groups such as Amnesty International, theater troupes such as No Refund Theatre and sports teams such as the Penn State Nittany Lionettes Dance Team.

"As people e-mail me back I'm like, 'Wow, I never knew they existed,' " Wright said.

Still, the level of interest remains high.

"We're actually thinking about extending it to a second week. There's been so much interest," Wright said.

And participants have said there are a few reasons why.

Penn State Pro-Wrestling Club Vice President Shannon Kentis (junior-biology) said she enjoyed the radio interview.

"They were definitely professional, but they kept it light enough that it was fun," she said.

Kentis said the group had such a good experience that they would definitely do it again.

The event is beneficial to the station and the group, Wright said. The goal is to raise student awareness, not only for The Lion, but for fellow student groups as well, he said.

"We'll see how flooded my mailbox gets," said PSNtv President Matt Ford (senior- journalism) after his interview on Monday.

Marketing Association President Lehua Simpson (senior-marketing) said the group's interview Tuesday night has led to other collaborations with The Lion.

Simpson said club members have offered to help with sales for the station. Sales will give club members practical experience and help The Lion by providing more resources.

"Already I think we've been very successful," Wright said.

He said he hopes the success of Get Involved Week makes an impact on students and administrators.
