Despite disagreements about how to lessen costs, on Monday, State College Borough Council awarded Leonard S. Fiore Inc. a contract to build a six-level parking garage at the intersection of Fraser Street and Beaver Avenue.

From Penn State to the state penitentiary, class is in session. Dirk Van Velzen is a Penn State World Campus student who is currently incarcerated at the California Correctional Institute and is paying his way through college by selling calendars made with artwork created by fellow inmates. Amy Stever, Van Velzen's academic adviser, said there are 50 incarcerated students pursuing degrees through Penn State's World Campus.

Garner Street motorists: get ready to share the road. State College Borough Council voted last week to connect the Boalsburg bicycle path to Garner Street for a one-year trial, giving Penn State student and faculty bicyclists another option when commuting to campus. Bicycle commuters have become a staple of State College life and the trend is increasing in popularity, said Brian Dempsey, former Centre Region Bike Coalition president.

Teresa Heinz Kerry is bringing her husband's presidential campaign to Penn State tomorrow night. Heinz Kerry will speak at 7:30 p. m.

An informational report given at yesterday's University Faculty Senate meeting revealed a sharp decrease in the number of international applications to the university's graduate school. According to the report presented by Eva Pell, vice president for research and dean of the graduate school, "international graduate applications are plummeting. "

A sea of pink washed over East Halls quad yesterday as "On the Way to the Cure -- the Komen College Tour," stopped at Penn State as part of a nationwide college campus tour. The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation created the event as part of its Young Women's Initiative program, designed to educate young adults about the disease, which claims about 40,000 lives each year.

Heavy rainfall and flooding could affect football game plans this weekend as Hurricane Ivan moves up the East Coast. "We are concerned about the slow speed of Ivan. The speed and track will be the key," said Alex Sosnowski, expert senior meteorologist at AccuWeather.

The Undergraduate Student Government (USG) Senate voted last night to recommend to Penn State administrators that the university look at alternative methods of alerting students about snow delays and cancellations. Specifically, Senate recommended the university publicize a phone number already in existence, which students and employees can call to hear the status of closings or delays. They also recommended the university send an e-mail message to students with such notices.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it. In the case of a "bend-don't-break" pass defense though, the idea is to fix it before it gets "broken. "

All things considered, Penn State football coach Joe Paterno was in good spirits yesterday at his weekly press conference. In fact, even with all things not considered, he was in very good spirits. He was even chipper, almost.

With an offense struggling to score goals, one might think that members of the Penn State field hockey team have had today's date circled on their calendars for weeks. After all, when the No. 19 Nittany Lions (1-4) face off against Temple (3-3) at 5 p.

In the No. 5 Penn State women's soccer team's 5-0 annihilation of Bucknell last night, the midfield play was the key. Despite not lighting up the stat sheet, one assist and two shots on net combined, the Nittany Lions' midfield duo of Ali Krieger and Carmelina Moscato were the difference makers, totally outplaying their Bison counterparts and controlling the game.

With the goalie competition as tight as it is, last night's game against Bucknell (3-3) was not a very good stage to make the case for starter. Erin McLeod, who earned the start for the No. 5 Penn State (4-1) women's soccer team, got about as much action as an ear piece at a mime show.
