Recent changes to the student ID+ cards will be more convenient and beneficial for students, university officials say. A new LionCash+ spending program replaced the gold LionCash chip and merged with the Diners Club meal plan this summer. New students this semester received their ID+ cards without a LionCash chip.
As more students each year opt to study abroad, the same problems facing campuses nationwide are now extended overseas, forcing some universities to consider reforming their study abroad programs. Dropping beer bottles onto passing cars, throwing trash from hotel windows and engaging in fist fights with local residents are just some of the recent misdeeds forcing some university officials to reflect on the state of the programs. Several factors contribute to this increasing trend of poor behavior among students, and almost all infractions are alcohol related.

Penn State linebacker Mike Sothern was sentenced Friday to two years of probation on charges of terroristic threats, simple assault, disorderly conduct, criminal mischief and harassment. Sothern was also ordered to pay $315 in damages. The charges stem from a Feb.
Izaac Rodriguez, of Las Cruces, N. M. , was sentenced on Friday to 5 to 10 years in a correctional facility for a November stabbing of Penn State student Brad Hawkins.
Somber and tearful faces were prevalent at Old Main Friday as about 100 people gathered to mourn the deaths of the victims of the Beslan siege that occurred in Russia two weeks ago. Supporters, some who adorned T-shirts bearing the words "Help Children," observed a moment of silence for the victims and many held signs encouraging people to join the vigil. Many onlookers accepted an invitation to make speeches of condolence to the crowd and cited the incident as an "emotional rape of humanity.

Fresh from Athens, Greece, Olympians Michael Phelps, Ian Crocker and Lenny Krayzelburg came to Penn State yesterday and made a splash. The three medalists took part in Disney's Swim with the Stars, at McCoy Natatorium; afterward a second event featured Phelps answering questions and signing autographs in the HUB-Robeson Center's Heritage Hall. About 700 people came to see the three Olympians promote their sport to young swimmers.

Molly Landreth said she was "scared to death" coming into Saturday's Spiked Shoe Invitational. For a person who hasn't raced in six months, she didn't look like it. Her race certainly didn't reflect it.
In most cases, a team would like to come out of the gates quickly, getting off to a great start. Unfortunately for the Penn State men's cross country team, success in its first meet may have meant holding on to that great start. The host Nittany Lions finished fifth at Saturday's Spiked Shoe Invitational, dropping four spots from last year's victory.
Penn State men's rugby coach Don Ferrell called it "a positive step in the right direction. " In fact, it was a huge step in the right direction when the Ruggers defeated the Ohio State Buckeyes 28-18 this weekend.
Michigan did beat Notre Dame this weekend, but it was on the golf course not on the football field. At the Lady Northern Invitational for women's golf, the Wolverines placed first in the tournament beating out the Fighting Irish, and the rest of the Big Ten. As for Penn State, the Nittany Lions placed 11th out of the field of 15, which led them to summarize their performance as very disappointing.
This weekend had a better beginning than ending for the Penn State field hockey team. The Lions (1-4) picked up their first win of the season Friday at James Madison (0-5), a 2-0 effort. Yesterday, however, Penn State coach Char Morett's team showed its youth and inexperience as it fell 2-1 to a talented North Carolina team (6-0).
Dream come true. The No. 7 Penn State women's volleyball team (6-0) went to Stanford trying to get a sweep that would keep the squad undefeated and it delivered.
