Ruggers topple Buckeyes on road

Collegian Staff Writer

Penn State men's rugby coach Don Ferrell called it "a positive step in the right direction."

In fact, it was a huge step in the right direction when the Ruggers defeated the Ohio State Buckeyes 28-18 this weekend.

For the past two years, the Buckeyes have dominated the Ruggers with their imposing forward line and physical style of play.

However, Saturday everything looked the same, with the Ruggers building a lead and the Buckeyes surging back to tie the score. The only difference this time was that the Ruggers hung on and finished what they started.

"It was a good win as we played a really good Ohio State team," Penn State's men's backs coach Terry Ryland said.

The first 35 minutes saw the Ruggers build-up a sizeable lead, only to see it diminish with sloppy play.

During the last five minutes of the first half and the first fifteen minutes of the second half, the Ruggers allowed the Buckeyes to get back into the game as a result of this three try scoring spreeto tie the game and be in position to take the lead.

"We started off really well," Penn State men's rugby coach Don Ferrell said.

"We got a score really early in the game... Their scores were from mistakes."

This time the Ruggers closed out the Buckeyes and sealed their most impressive win so far this season.

"The first thing I did after the game was to make sure they acted like they expected to win this game," Ferrell said. "This wasn't an upset."

The man-of-the-match was substitute forward Steve Flab, who impressed coaches with his play during the kickoffs.

Fullback Dominic Mara scored 15 points as a result of three tries, while flyhalf Justin Hundley finished with 13 points, with one try, two penalties and a conversion.

Keys to the Ruggers win were their depth, as they used all six of their substitutions and a game-plan that was effectively implemented.

"Our game-plan was to control the ball in the forwards and then get quick balls out to the backs," Ferrell said.

Consequently the Buckeyes were worn out, which the Ruggers used to their advantage to give the knock out punch that sealed an impressive victory over the Buckeyes.

The B and C-sides also had wins against the Buckeyes and Man-of-the-match winners were Matt Miller in the B-side and Luke Rocker for C-side.
