Izaac Rodriguez, of Las Cruces, N.M., was sentenced on Friday to 5 to 10 years in a correctional facility for a November stabbing of Penn State student Brad Hawkins.
Rodriguez was visiting a friend in the area at the time of the altercation. He was convicted of one count of aggravated assault, three counts of simple assault and one count of reckless endangerment.
According to court documents, the altercation between Hawkins and Rodriguez took place in the early morning hours of Nov. 23. Hawkins and a group of friends were walking down Calder Way when Rodriguez and a friend passed the group and Rodriguez grabbed the buttocks of a woman with Hawkins.
An altercation ensued and Hawkins received the stab wound to his chest. He had to be airlifted to Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, where he was treated for a punctured lung and internal bleeding. Police later apprehended Rodriguez and his friend. Rodriguez was also given separate sentences of four months to two years of jail time for simple assault and reckless endangerment. The additional sentences can be served concurrently with the aggravated assault sentence. He was also ordered to pay $15,870.68 in restitution to the court and Hawkins for medical services. Rodriguez, who has two children and intentions of returning to college, also said he regrets what he had done.
"I am sorry for any inconvenience I have caused for what I had done," he added.
Judge David Grine said the sentence is the minimum containment for the protection of the public.
"A lesser sentence would depreciate the crime."
