Penn State linebacker Mike Sothern was sentenced Friday to two years of probation on charges of terroristic threats, simple assault, disorderly conduct, criminal mischief and harassment.
Sothern was also ordered to pay $315 in damages.
The charges stem from a Feb. 28 incident, when, according to police reports, Sothern caused a disturbance in an off-campus apartment hallway, threatened a man and caused property damage.
Sothern was a redshirt freshman walk-on at the time of the incident, and traveled to Boston College with the football team this weekend. He was listed as third-string inside linebacker on the Penn State football team's most recent depth chart.
According to police, Sothern was seen leaving Beaver Hill apartments, 340 E. Beaver Ave., after an unidentified man urinated on the victim's girlfriend's door.
The victim's girlfriend told the man to leave and the victim left the apartment and saw a man running from the area. The victim followed the man, but returned to the apartment after being unable to locate him, police said.
According to police, as the victim approached the apartment, an unknown man later identified as Sothern approached him and began shouting and calling the victim derogatory names. Sothern then threatened to kill the victim.
Police said the victim continued to walk away and when he reached his girlfriend's apartment, saw Sothern was still behind him. Sothern then grabbed the victim, pushed him backward into the hallway wall and attempted to provoke a fight by telling the victim to hit him, police said.
Several bystanders entered the hallways and witnessed the event, police said. Police said Sothern continued to kick the apartment door 10 to 15 times when he was locked out. State College police officer M.L. Rhodes said at the time of the crime he responded to complaints of damage to an apartment door in Beaver Hill and saw a man matching Sothern's description leaving the apartment complex.
Calls made to David Grine and Sothern's attorney Anthony DeBoef were not returned.
